Steps you choose to connect

Choose iPhone steps or Apple Health. Apple Health access is limited to reading step counts; Walk Together does not write to Health or read your other health records. Completed minute totals and their times sync to your account to calculate personal progress and shared crew journeys.

Recent Health step totals can suggest a daily goal. You choose the final goal. Switching sources does not add both sources’ totals together.

After you connect steps, iOS may give the app time to sync your selected source in the background. Apple Health can also notify the app that step records changed. This uses the same step permission and does not add location tracking. Background timing is controlled by iOS; step access may be unavailable while the phone is locked. Opening the app catches up on readable steps.

Places, not a record of your walk

Country maps and route discoveries use a catalogue bundled with the app. Browsing it does not request your location, search Apple Maps or fetch street imagery or photographs.

Your country selections, route progress, discoveries and journey distances are saved with your account. Earlier custom destinations remain saved until completed or explicitly replaced; they may reveal which area you previously chose. The map shows game progress, not where you are physically walking.

Route-information links open a publisher’s website only when you choose them. That website receives the normal connection information for your visit, but this feature does not send it step data.

What your crew can see

Crew members can see your explorer name, chosen explorer artwork, daily steps, daily goals, destination names, journey progress and medals. Shared crew progress uses matched physical steps and separate capped Step Reserves. Joining a crew keeps your own routes.

Invite codes give access to a private crew. Share them only with people you want to join. The app does not upload your contacts or send invitations on your behalf.

Your account and saved adventure

Clerk handles sign-in, including your email and account credentials. Its account security records can include session and device identifiers, IP address, and approximate city or country inferred from that address. This is separate from step counting and does not track the route you walk. The game uses your account identifier and chosen explorer name to restore your adventure. Vercel runs the game service and Neon stores its records.

Your walking motivation, preferred company, walking rhythm and favourite scenery personalise setup and route suggestions. These preferences remain private to your account. Only your chosen explorer artwork and your crew colour are shared with crew members.

If you choose a profile photo in the sign-in account editor, Clerk stores that selected image with your account and displays it as your account avatar. This does not upload your photo library or change your game’s earned cosmetic collection.

The app keeps saved progress, step-sync information, settings and pending changes on your device. A widget keeps a small progress summary in storage shared only with this app’s extension. Anyone who can see a widget on your screen may be able to read that summary.

The watch companion receives your current adventure and step progress from its paired iPhone. Watch buttons work through a connected iPhone. A disconnected watch can still show its last update; signing out clears that summary when the phone can reach the watch.

Notifications you choose

Notifications are optional. You can choose progress updates, crew milestones and quiet hours in the app’s settings. They are updates about your adventure, not advertisements. Quiet hours use this iPhone’s time zone; updates that fall within them are skipped.

If enabled, the game service stores Apple’s notification device token, an installation identifier, your account reference, notification choices and time zone. Apple Push Notification service receives that device token and a short, general message. Notification messages do not include your name, email, step counts, Health records, place names or coordinates. Anyone who can see notifications on your screen may be able to read their general message.

Device registrations expire after 30 days without renewal. Delivery records are eligible for removal 14 days after an update expires, and inactive installation records 90 days after their registration expires. A daily cleanup performs removal; delays can extend retention. Signing out requests removal of the registration and clears visible alerts. An offline removal retries when you reopen the app; a message already accepted by Apple cannot be recalled. Deleting your account clears its notification registrations and delivery records.

Changing your permissions

You can change Health access in the Health app and Motion & Fitness access in iPhone Settings. Turning off a permission stops future access to that source; it does not remove previously synced progress.

You can choose iPhone steps without giving Health access. Browsing country routes does not request location access. Signing out keeps your saved adventure; it does not delete your account or the server’s step records.

How the information is used

Account, step and place information support sign-in, saved progress, crew features and troubleshooting. The game also saves daily visits, onboarding progress, medal acknowledgements and cosmetic choices with your account, so your progress and rewards carry across devices. Subscription and purchase records, including test purchases, are used to restore access and resolve payment status; the game does not receive your full payment card details. This app does not sell your health or location information or use it for advertising.

Network services receive connection information such as an IP address and keep request, authentication and error records for security and troubleshooting. Game-service error messages omit names, steps and notification tokens. Apple also provides the developer with TestFlight testing information, crash reports and feedback you choose to submit. Review screenshots before sharing them.

Crash and connection diagnostics

The app keeps a limited diagnostic history on your iPhone for seven days. It records operation times, error codes, request references and app/iOS versions, not your steps, Health records, name, email, locations, credentials or request contents. You can prepare, review, share or clear this report in Settings.

Automatic reports from your iPhone are optional and off by default. If your version offers “Share crash and connection reports” in Settings → Diagnostics, you can turn it on to share reports with Sentry. Earlier versions do not send automatic reports. These reports contain crash stack addresses and binary identifiers, app/iOS versions, error categories and random request references. They exclude account and device identifiers, names, step totals, Health records, messages, screenshots and screen recordings. No advertising, session replay or product-usage analytics is enabled by this feature.

Turning off automatic reports clears unsent diagnostic files on this device. Changing or signing out of your game account also clears the queue and turns the setting off. A request already in flight or a report already received by Sentry cannot be recalled from the device. Locally queued reports are capped and old files are removed after seven days when the app next starts reporting. Contact support about a report you have already shared.

The game service sends restricted operational error reports to Sentry. These contain a known operation, error code, HTTP status, release version and random request reference; no account identifier, step or Health payload is included. Sentry event storage is configured in the EU. Sentry still receives connection information to deliver the service; IP-address storage and derived geography are disabled. Other provider, account and support processing may occur elsewhere.

Operational error events are retained for 90 days during the initial service trial and 30 days on the free Developer plan. Sentry may retain a separate backup for up to 90 days after that backup was created. Reports do not contain an account identifier, so support may need the random request reference from your local diagnostic report to find a particular error. Error reporting is best-effort and is not a backup of your adventure.

Sentry also checks the public service health page to notify the operator about outages. These checks do not include player accounts, steps or Health records. Public check results and timing may be processed outside the EU; they are separate from optional reports from your iPhone.

Keeping and removing your information

Your account and saved adventure remain in the game database until removed. Signing out, uninstalling the app or disconnecting a step source does not erase information already synced.

Choose Delete account in Settings to remove your sign-in account and this game’s saved progress. Confirmation is required. This also removes your group membership and step records; other players keep their own earned progress. Removal does not change records in Apple Health. If your installed version does not offer this action, or you cannot sign in, contact support to request removal.

A failed or interrupted removal can need another connection before server or device cleanup finishes. A small account-specific removal record is retained to prevent old requests restoring the deleted save. It contains a coded account reference and removal time, not your name, email, steps or location. It has no automatic expiry.

Private recovery copies can contain older account and game records after removal from the live service. These copies currently have no automatic expiry or automatic removal when an account is deleted. They are kept separately for recovery, not used for gameplay. Contact support about removing information from retained recovery copies. Removing an account from the live game does not immediately erase every retained copy.

Services that process information

Clerk provides authentication, Vercel hosts the game service, and Neon stores game records. Apple provides step permissions, notifications and TestFlight. These services process the information needed for their functions, including connection and security information. Their own privacy notices explain their processing.

The game servers and databases are configured in Sydney. Authentication, provider logs, support, recovery systems and other provider processing may take place in other countries. This service does not promise that all information stays in Australia.

Wikimedia Commons provides credited photographs of public places. Image requests go to Wikimedia; step records and your account credentials are not included.

Membership and purchase records

Live subscription payments are not enabled in this release. The separate membership website currently uses Stripe test mode for designated test accounts. If you use that test flow, Stripe processes the checkout details, and the game stores a customer reference and subscription status. Health data and precise location are not sent to Stripe. Financial providers may retain transaction records under their own requirements.
